The Spotlight Series
(Free Admission)

The Spotlight Series is a selection of films that will be played during the Aruba International Film Festival on the 6th of June. These films were all produced in the Caribbean and were selected by the AIFF, Caribbean Film Foundation (CFF) and the Department of Culture in Aruba.

The goal of this event is to stimulate and promote young film talent and to create a stage for their film production. The directors of most of these films will also be present during this afternoon to share more information about their films.

The Spotlight series will take place on Sunday the 6th of June from 11 am to 3pm.

Sunday
Every Sunday, for buddies, Jimmy, Charlie, Marv and Bob, meet up to play a game of dominoes at Bob's house. Bob's wife Nora always prepares the domino table and serves the gentlemen whiskey as they play. Between these five characters, everyone knows a secret about another. On this particular Sunday, as we go through the minds of each character, each secret is unveiled.

Show Me Your Motion
A film that explores issues of gender, national identity, globalization, class and race in a tourist driven Bahamas through interviews and recordings of children’s songs and dances known as Ringplay.

Ava & Gabriel
In the late 1940’s a painter is hired to paint a mural of the Virgin Mary in St. Anna’s Church. The close-knit Antillean society of that time does not react well to the fact that he is black. Calypso Dreams chronicles the rich and complex cultural roots of calypso music in Trinidad and Tobago. Featuring performances by such seminal acts as Mighty Sparrow, Calypso Rose, Lord Superior, Brother Valentino, Regeneration Now, and Mystic Prowler. The film also includes archival footage of Calypso pioneers Grandmaster Kitchener and Lord Pretender.

Voices in the Clouds
An American man journeys to discover the spirit and heritage of his deceased mother, uncovering the wonders of a tribal culture in Taiwan. Boys of Summer
A feature documentary about a scrappy band of Caribbean boys who dream of the big time: winning the Little League World Series at Williamsport, Pennsylvania. It's about children carrying the privilege and burden of a nation's pride. It's about athletes competing at the highest level and having the time of their lives.

The Legend of Buchifil
The story is well known on the islands. The film is set in slavery on the island of Curacao. Buchifil is a proud slave who stands up for himself, much to the anger of the 'Shon' (slave owner) and his supervisor. Buchifil also has a weakness: his love for Mosa Nen, a beautiful slave.

Zulaika
Zulaika, a young girl living with her grandmother, is in danger of being dismissed from school for her inability to pay tuition. Of Men and Gods
Prevalent, yet still taboo, homosexuality and gay culture are allowed to flourish within the context of Haiti's Vodoo religion. Meanwhile, the AIDS epidemic looms as a continual threat and adds a disquieting degree of nihilism to their relatively optimistic attitudes toward life and happiness in Port-au-Prince.
